The Many Benefits of Bariatric Surgery
Bariatric surgery is one of the few effective options for weight loss that can be offered to obese patients today. Although there are several different specific techniques, they all effectively work by making the stomach smaller and thereby reducing appetite and capacity. Top surgical teams like those with the Mexico Bariatric Team in Mexicali, Mexico have offered hundreds of obese patents renewed hope for a longer and healthier life by performing a gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band or gastric plication surgery.
But weight loss isn’t the only benefit of bariatric surgery. Many obese patients also have a serious secondary condition know as “nonalcoholic fatty liver disease” or NAFLD. This is when fat is deposited (steatosis) in the liver, but not due to excessive alcohol use. It is related to insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome and may lead to more serious liver inflammation and fibrosis or cirrhosis of the liver. Over time, as many as 10% of those with these complications may suffer death related to liver disease.
While the exact cause of NAFLD is unknown, common factors in of this condition are a history of the use of certain medications, drinking soft drinks and genetics. An improved diet and gradual weight loss typically improve NAFLD. But for obese patients who have been unable to achieve weight loss through dieting and exercise, improvement in their NAFLD condition is unlikely to be seen.
That is until now.
A recent study has shown that bariatric surgery, well known for metabolic changes leading to weight loss, now appears to make changes in the expression of the genetic causes of NAFLD as well. So not only does bariatric surgery lead to weight loss, but to other dynamic changes including at least partially reversible genetic changes in the liver related to NAFLD. Further, the genetic changes seen may be a key to the restoration of insulin sensitivity.
What this means is that bariatric surgery not only helps obese patients return to a more normal body weight, but may also contribute to the healing of fatty livers and insulin resistance.
The Mexico Bariatric Team surgical team is proud to be able to offer obese patients from anywhere in the world all of the many health benefits of bariatric surgery.
